Colon Cancer Screening Community Project March to August 2010

Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer amongst men and 3rd most common amongst women in Malaysia.

Screening projects to detect colorectal cancer in its early stage in Australia and UK have resulted in a reduction in colorectal cancer deaths. Such a screening project has not as yet been carried out in Malaysia or any other under developed parts of Asia and the rest of the world.

Which is why, we are going to launch the first Malaysian Colorectal Cancer Screening Program in the first quarter of 2010, targeting 400 subjects from the poorer districts in our city here. The first project will be for the residents of Sentul.

The aims of this important life saving project are to trigger public awareness about this prevalent disease and to determine the feasibility of screening for colorectal cancer in the Malaysian population using a faecal immunohistochemical test (FIT).

National education campaigns as well as more focused workshops at the target screening sites in low income areas will be conducted by EMPOWERED. The first project site is Bandar Baru Sentul. About 400 residents from eight low cost housing developments will be screened. EMPOWERED collaborated with the following:
